Job Description

Reporting to

The Deputy Nursery Manager is responsible to the Manager

Deputising for the Nursery Manager and be responsible for the daily running and administration of the nursery in their absence, adhering to the Policies & Procedures of Cambridge Montessori Ltd, ensuring compliance with the Children Act, Health and Safety legislation, all within the requirements and guidelines laid down by OFSTED and the Welfare Standards.

Duties to include:

  • Ensuring confidentiality is maintained in the nursery.

  • Working as part of a team, remaining mutually respectful at all times.

  • Assisting the Manager to ensure a tier system of management is in place and that duties are delegated fairly.

  • To assist the nursery manager to supervise and ensure routines and practices are followed each day.

  • To do extra hours if required by the needs of the Nursery, making sure ratios are maintained.

  • Maintaining staff ratios and ensuring staff are deployed effectively.

  • Supporting and liaising with the Manager on a daily basis. Attend regular management meetings.

  • Care and supervision of the children with regard to their physical, emotional and intellectual needs.

  • Planning and preparing activities to develop all aspects of the child's individual development in a stimulating atmosphere. This planning to be to EYFS for 06 months – 5 years.

  • Ensuring that the preparation, care, cleanliness and maintenance of the nursery rooms, equipment, resources etc. are carried out according to the policies & procedures and risk assessments.

  • To support a group of children as key person and support, maintain and create strong partnerships with parents.

  • Working with the Manager to maintain administrative records as directed by the Manager and Directors.

  • The Deputy Nursery Manager must at all times be aware of the administration of medication and report all cases to the manager.

  • Ensure that accident, incident and risk assessment records are completed fully, and passed to the manager.

  • Attendance regular staff meetings at times appointed by the Nursery Manager.

  • Offering all children equal opportunities with regard to their religious denomination, racial origins, gender, disabilities, cultural or linguistic background; in particular, ex. challenging situations where racism or discrimination is displayed.

  • Assisting the Manager and participating in regular parents' evenings, publicity, open mornings and children's outings.

  • To attend training appropriate to their job role to maintain and exceed current practice.

  • Become knowledgeable with Montessori terminology and methods.

  • Any other duties appropriate to the post as directed by the Nursery Manager and Directors.

  • To work with the Montessori Teachers, Room Leaders where employed to prepare and submit planning to the Nursery Manager) every Friday ready to be checked.

  • To complete daily ‘End of day Check’ at the end of each day and submit to the manager or management at the office for checking on their arrival the next day.

  • Liaise with management each morning, Monday to Friday to formally discuss the previous evening’s responsibilities and outcomes.

  • To act as deputy in the Managers absence from 8.00 to 6pm daily according to contracted hours and in accordance with roles and responsibilities under the supervision and authority of the management.

  • Administration of your key children’s progress data, making observations in line with planning and evaluation. Updating continuously as required and working closely with management to fulfil EYFS functions and obligations.

Cambridge Montessori Team Responsibilities

  • To work in partnership with setting management/staff and trainees as part of a highly motivated and professional team.

  • To be part of a team of early years practitioners providing safe and stimulating childcare, under the direction of the Setting Manager/owners.

  • To promote and actively demonstrate good practice in a professional and inclusive manner.

  • To be fully involved in all activities associated with the childcare provision and support others sharing knowledge and experience in accordance with the deputy manager job description.

  • To understand, work within and promote the settings policies and procedures.

  • To share any child protection concerns immediately with the Designated Person.

  • Administering of first aid to children and staff as required. Training will be provided.

  • Keep the classroom clean and inviting. Encourage children and staff to care for their environment.

  • To work towards/maintain a good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and the Statutory Welfare Requirements and the ability to meet them/

  • Acquire a working knowledge of Montessori, its approaches and areas of learning and development. Training and reading to be provided.

  • Encourage individual work time to promote independence as well as group work to promote socialisation.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children, parents and co-workers.

  • Support children and staff during snack and lunch periods while helping children to learn how to help themselves.

  • Encourage the children to feed themselves.

Responsible for the ‘supervision’ of cleanliness of the rooms in the following areas, utilising daily checklists:

Sweep/mop lunch area.

Vacuum classroom at the start and end of the academic day.

Clean bathrooms at least once a day.

Emptying bins at the end of the academic day.

Disinfecting work and dusting shelves weekly.

To ensure that materials and equipment are stored properly and activities are cleared up after use.

To have due regard to the provisions of Health & Safety at Work legislation, as detailed in the Health and Safety policy.

Undertake such additional responsibilities as required by the Manager/Directors, which commensurate with the grade and responsibilities of the post.

To act as ambassador for the Nursery School at all times.

Guide children in activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth following the philosophies of Maria Montessori by performing the following duties:

To support others and work as an effective member of an early year’s childcare team delivering a flexible, high quality childcare service that meets the needs of the children and their families.

  • Using experience and knowledge of the EYFS support and advice others to provide a safe, stimulating environment for children, with creative and appropriate play and learning opportunities. In accordance with the EYFS. Support the management to ensure that EYFS statutory requirements are maintained each day.

  • Support the management and nursery staff to maintain the ‘GOOD Ofsted grading using knowledge and experience of the EYFS and all its parts. To support the nursery and staff in working towards an ‘OUTSTANDING’ Ofsted grading.

  • Support staff throughout and lead by example and demonstrate best practice following nursery protocol. Assist the Montessori Directress with providing the children with a “prepared environment”. Training to be provided.

Education & qualifications


  • Enhanced CRB Disclosure

  • Minimum of a Level 3 childcare qualification in the UK, (ideally degree educated or Early Years Professional Status or PGCE Early Years)

  • Excellent English communication skills both written and verbal (English and Maths GCSE minimum “C” grade or if English is not your first language a CPE Grade C2 minimum is required.


  • Basic Food Hygiene

  • Basic Child Protection

  • First Aid (12 hour paediatric)

  • Montessori Teacher Assistant Certificate

Experience & Abilities


  • Minimum of 3 years consecutive experience working in a Nursery setting within the UK.

  • Experience at Deputy Manager role.

  • Experience of leading a nursery team of 5 or more members

  • Knowledge of Child Protection, SENCO, ENCO Roles and duties

  • An understanding of the requirements of children with special needs


  • Experience as an Acting Manager.


  • The ability to lead by example and support team members to your full potential.

  • To support the Nursery Managers and Directors in maintaining our ‘GOOD’ Ofsted grading and working towards an ‘Outstanding’ grade.

  • To ensure the delivery of the highest quality childcare and the EYFS for all children across the nursery.

Outline Terms and Conditions

Working Hours

This post is for 52 weeks of the year and requires a commitment of 40 hours per week, divided of 5 days, Monday to Friday. Hours of work may be changeable between the hours of 8 am and close of the nursery. You will be requested from time to time to attend meeting out of hours. 30 minutes lunch break.


Paid holiday entitlement must be arranged in advance with the management. During your employment you will receive a paid holiday entitlement of 5.6 weeks inclusive of public/bank holidays subject to a maximum of 28 days.

Additional Holiday Entitlement

We pay an additional day’s holiday for each year worked up to a maximum of 4 days (32 days paid holiday per year).

Starting Salary

The starting salary will be: Negotiable. Precise hourly rate to be discussed at interview and will be dependent on relative past experience. We take a positive interest in candidates past experience, knowledge and achievements so that we can make a valuable offer of employment.
